TV veteran Joan Lunden went public with her breast cancer fight during an interview on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday.

Lunden, the longest-running host of the show, returned to “GMA” to tell current presenter Robin Roberts about her diagnosis earlier this month.

She explained, “I heard those words that every woman fears and never wants to hear, ‘You have breast cancer’. In the beginning, it’s such a shock. It’s a stunner… For me, I’m a health advocate, I’m all over America talking to women, saying, ‘Make sure that you get all of your check-ups all the time.’ You almost feel like, ‘What did I do wrong?’

“Because we found it early, I was able to tell (my children) that mommy’s going to be okay… I have the more aggressive kind, and so it’s going to be the chemotherapy and the surgery and the radiation. So I’ve got that journey ahead.”

Lunden, 63, hosted “GMA” from 1980 to 1997. She is a mother to seven children, who range in age from nine to 33.

Social Service Groups Sue Governor for $100M Past Due

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate businessman Bruce Rauner participates in a Republican gubernatorial candidate debate Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Springfield, Ill. The four Republican gubernatorial candidates said that they’ll be willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a downstate debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes and just briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of the candidates.

Five dozen social service agencies working without pay for nearly a year because of the Illinois state budget stalemate are suing Gov. Bruce Rauner.
