This year marks the 100th anniversary of everyone’s favorite foundation garment, the brassiere.

According the New York Post, a New Yorker wanted something more comfortable and functional than the typical corset. Mary Phelps Jacob filed the first patent for a bra in February of 1914 and was granted a U.S. patent in November of the same year. She sold the design a short time later for $1,500.

That launched a billion-dollar industry that would see all types of inventions and innovations – from Frederick Mellinger’s push-up bra, to the Wonderbra, to the international lingerie giant known as Victoria’s Secret and its million-dollar, diamond-covered bras – undergarments have come a long way in the last century.

And check out the latest in lingerie fashion from the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
