The hour is coming … for those who would be last.
The filing period for the March 18, 2014, primary election in Illinois ends at 5 p.m. today. Those who file between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. will be in a lottery to determine who gets the arguably-coveted last spot on the ballot.
“Whether or not there’s the statistical analysis that shows that you either need to be first or last,” election board director Rupert Borgsmiller says, laughing, “that’s the conventional wisdom: you want to be first or you want to be last.”
Borgsmiller says once all the petitions are in comes the time-tested Illinois political game of challenging signatures in an attempt to get opponents removed from the ballot.
