Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson says he will make an announcement Wednesday on his future plans after he retires as sheriff. Williamson says then-Springfield Mayor Karen Hasara asked him to run at least 10 years ago and, since then his name is consistently brought up in GOP circles.
“They say what are you going to do next? What are your plans?” says Williamson. “Naturally it comes up since the mayor’s race comes up next year after the sheriff’s race, they say ‘why don’t your run for mayor?’ ”
Williamson is set to retire as sheriff next November. He says if he were to run, he would commit to two terms. He points out that he’s almost 64 and is not sure he wants to still be working in his 70s.
Williamson says he is focused only on his job as county sheriff and getting Undersheriff Jack Campbell elected next year.
