Officials of the University of Illinois police department say they’ve seen an increase in the number of stolen bicycles this school year on the Champaign-Urbana campus.
Captain Roy Acree says he thinks the spike comes from thieves struggling financially. He tells The News-Gazette that reports of stolen bikes usually increase when school is in session. He says that’s because there are more students using bicycles for transportation.
Acree says stolen bicycles should be reported to police. He urges students to register their bikes and always use a lock.
