Vitamins and minerals are necessary for our daily health, but too much of certain ones could be harmful. Memorial clinical dietitian Christina Rollins says vitamins come in 2 different forms. The majority are water soluble, which means the body absorbs what it needs and gets rid of excess through the urinary system.
“The problem is when it comes to the fat soluable vitamins. So vitamins A, D, E and K.” explains Rollins. “These are stored in your body, so over time if you take them in excess, they can become toxic and you can become very sick from them.”
Rollins says so called mega vitamins can pose the biggest risk, with hundreds to thousands of the percentage of the daily recommended doses of vitamins in them. She says unless your doctor tells you to take them, you can skip the expense of the supplements while getting all the nutrition you need through a balanced diet.
