Springfield Sharefest Looks to Improve More Schools

Two Springfield schools will get an “extreme makeover” thanks to the Springfield Sharefest program.

In 2011, the community driven program led by Westside Christian Church transformed Harvard Park School, which has since seen an increase in student scores and received an award from the Illinois State Board of education for performance gains.

Program director Melissa Sandel outlines the improvements that will be made at McClernand and Jane Addams schools.

“Makeover projects will include the installation of playground equipment, soccer fields, basketball courts, landscaping and outdoor classrooms, as well as new flooring, paint, furniture, kitchen upgrades white boards and other interior remodeling,” says Sandel. “A new parking lot will also be added at Jane Addams Elementary School to resolve traffic issues.”

“These two schools and their students represent an awful lot of need,” says Springfield Mayor Mike┬áHouston. “Today I urge all Springfield residents to be part of this endeavor and get involved. We need all the help we can get.”

Sandel says the program is once again looking to the community for volunteers and donations of materials and money. More information is available at springfieldsharefest.org.
