Springfield Emergency Alert System Expanded for Public Use
Springfield Emergency Alert System Expanded for Public Use

A new emergency notification system is up and running on the springfield.il.us website.

Citizens can sign up for email, texting and voice messages by checking a number of different boxes that correspond to different emergencies. After events like¬†this week’s tornado in Moore, Oklahoma,¬†Mayor Mike Houston says it’s important to take precautions.

“As we go through the season we are in right now, we are constantly dealing with weather alerts,” says Houston. “You never know what other types of emergencies will be taking place where this would really be a matter of life or death.”

Police Chief Robert Williams says the new notification system is an expansion of one previously used by the police department.
