Area residents gathered together to help the tornado victims of Washington on Saturday.
The event was held at Ace Hardware on Wabash Avenue. Stephanie Lahnum was one of the original individuals behind the idea. she said that she wanted to help and the idea originated with her gathering supplies in her basement. Lahnum said that the support was so great that she had to expand on her idea.
“We were going to take some donations and I was going to store them and we were going to drive them up to Washington but the idea just grew, and grew, and grew, through facebook, and so many people liking our page, coming to volunteer, so we just made it big.”
And by making it big, Lahnum means filling a tractor-trailer. Over two dozen people were loading cars, boxes and bags and hauling them onto the trailer. Lahnum said there were so many people that she didn’t even recognize. The outpouring of support, she said, was amazing.
The event was held from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Lahnum said area businesses were donating boxes, money, supplies and even hot chocolate.
