Special Session Has Same Economic Impact as Conventions

When lawmakers head back to Springfield for a special session, several area businesses gear up for their arrival. Downtown Springfield Inc.’s Victoria Ringer says a number of downtown restaurants have regular customers who work at the statehouse.

“Some of those legislators have been going to those establishments for twenty years, so theĀ  restaurants know that when those folks, their staffs, their colleagues, their friends are going to be in town to maybe up their food order a little, or make plans for that.”

Ringer says having a special session is much like having a convention in town, with thousands of people spending money at local hotels, stores and gas stations during their time here.
