Because the secretary of state is also the state librarian and archivist, Jesse White can appreciate a good story. And because he’s a veteran, he can also appreciate the value of veterans telling of their experiences.
White hosted a commemoration of his Illinois Veterans History Project at the Illinois State Library Tuesday.
“It’s been tough getting people to share their stories with us,” says White, “but we’ve been energetic in asking them to come forward to let us know what they experienced while they were in the military, so we can make this a part of history, so others can go to our web site and pull up some of those stories, so they can experience some of the experiences that these individuals experienced.”
The project, established in 2005, has collected more than 6500 people’s stories.
