Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Schmidt has sided with Springfield media outlets that internal police files older than four years old should be made public.
Case defendant Calvin Christian says the city must now comply with Freedom of Information Act requests.
“(Schmidt) has taken off the restraining order preventing the city from releasing the files, which means that now the city is not held by a judge,” Christian told WTAX’s Ray Lytle Monday.
The police union filed an injunction to stop the files from being released, noting the city violated the union contract stating internal affairs files be destroyed after four years. Some of the files in question date back to 2001. Judge Schmidt previously ruled internal affairs files must be open. Attorneys for the police union said they will appeal.
