Sangamon County is getting its own pathologist to conduct forensic autopsies.
The Sangamon County Board approved a resolution that will allow Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital to equally fund the new position. The salary will be $175,000 and around $75,000 for insurance benefits. Currently, the county is transporting forensic autopsies to Bloomington. That costs $900 plus any additional expenses, like travel. Board Chairman Andy Van Meter is excited about making this position local.
“The whole system will run much smoother, having someone right here. I think if we’re lucky, we will develop kind of a regional competency so that all of the forensic pathology work will be coming to Springfield.”
Van Meter is proud of the work by the two hospitals as well.
“The hospitals have just been incredibly civic-minded to step up and really guarantee the revenue we needed for this highly educated forensic pathologist.”
Van Meter says there won’t likely be any additional costs or savings. He added that it is more about bringing the position to the area and having a local presence.
