Salvage Yard Fire Briefly Closes Terminal Ave.; Fire Truck Crashes En Route

Fire crews have departed Terminal Ave. after quickly extinguishing a salvage yard fire.

Crews arrived at around 3:45 and blocked off the road from the south. It appears the fire affected a few old tires and cars.

A motorcyclist driving down Terminal Ave. while crews were on scene was thrown from his bike after running over fire hoses. He wasn’t injured, but he was ticketed.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Meanwhile, a Springfield fire truck was in an accident en route to the scene.

Fire Department Deputy Chief Mark Hart says an engine just put into service four to five months ago was turning north on Dirksen Pkwy. from South Grand Ave. East when an elderly man crashed into its side. The engine’s lights and sirens were active. It’s unclear why the man crashed into the truck; he was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries but they’re not believed to be life threatening.

The crash closed the intersection of Dirsken and South Grand. No fire or medical staff were injured, but the truck has been taken out of commission temporarily.
