Rutherford: I Can Win
One of the Republican candidates for governor is making it sound like he’s winning, and his claims are largely true.
State Treasurer Dan Rutherford told a Republican audience in Danville that he’s the only Republican candidate to have won a statewide race, that he’s leading in the polls and that his fundraising is “top of the heap.”
Rutherford is the only one of the four Republican candidates for governor to have been elected to statewide office. State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) won the Republican nomination for governor in 2010, which was a statewide race, but he lost the general election.
Rutherford raised $337,000 in the third quarter of this year, second to $1.8 million raised by Bruce Rauner, though Rutherford stands in first place among Republicans with $1.2 million cash on hand. Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn has $2.9 million cash on hand.
“I’m extremely cautiously optimistic that I’m gonna be the Republican nominee and that I can beat Pat Quinn and become the governor,” he said.
