The state treasurer says aggressive marketing is part of the reason why his office’s unclaimed property division is giving back more than $100 million in cash and other goods for the third straight year.
Dan Rutherford says the office has processed about as many claims, more than 50,000, in the first nine months of this year as it has in each of the last two full years.
Sometimes there’s a compelling story. “I’ve got sixteen Purple Hearts that I am unable to find the rightful owners to,” Rutherford says. “Last year I was able to return a Purple Heart to (a woman) whose father had earned it. That was an extremely emotional time.”
