Potential Insurance Changes Confuse Lawmakers
Potential Insurance Changes Confuse Lawmakers

The transition to state-sponsored Medicare plans continues, and it’s not an easy one for state retirees – or lawmakers – to grasp.

β€œIs there some web site or something that explains all this in plain English?” asked State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). β€œTo be brutally honest, this is confusing enough for us.” No web site yet, Rose was told.

β€œWe do find, historically, for our retirees,” said Janice Bonneville, who runs the department that administers state employee benefits, β€œthat they’ve become accustomed to a certain carrier, and, so, they think they must have that carrier, without understanding that any carrier would give them access to that same Medicare provider.”

Bonneville and others representing the state and its retirees took questions from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability.
