The transition to state-sponsored Medicare plans continues, and it’s not an easy one for state retirees – or lawmakers – to grasp.
“Is there some web site or something that explains all this in plain English?” asked State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). “To be brutally honest, this is confusing enough for us.” No web site yet, Rose was told.
“We do find, historically, for our retirees,” said Janice Bonneville, who runs the department that administers state employee benefits, “that they’ve become accustomed to a certain carrier, and, so, they think they must have that carrier, without understanding that any carrier would give them access to that same Medicare provider.”
Bonneville and others representing the state and its retirees took questions from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability.
