Portions of East Monroe Street in downtown Springfield will be closed for at least a week after a Wednesday morning sewer cave in.
The road will be closed between 9th and 11th Streets. It’s unclear at this time what caused the cave-in, but that area has undergone numerous public works projects over the past year — including daytime work that’s currently underway. It’s unclear if the cave in is related.
Drivers that disregard Road Closed or Do Not Enter signs could face a $250 fine.
