“Police Shredding” Lawsuit Can Continue
“Police Shredding” Lawsuit Can Continue

Springfield’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit over destroyed police files has been denied, and it will continue.

Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Belz did, however, agree to limit the scope of the case. It was filed after the police department destroyed police documents a year early without proper consent. Some of those files destroyed had just been requested via the Freedom of Information Act, and it’s unclear whether they were destroyed after the requests were received.

Included in the requested documents was a 2008 investigation of now Deputy Police Chief Cliff Buscher, who was arrested in Missouri after drunkenly firing a service weapon into a lake.
