Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is expanding its destinations.
Starting November 22nd Allegiant Air will fly non-stop twice a week between Springfield and Sanford-Orlando International Airport.
Sanford is about 35 minutes from downtown Orlando, and other airports offer direct Orlando service, but airport authority board chairman Frank Vala says Springfield will have no trouble competing.
“If you go into the regular airport, I still think it’s 20 minutes to Disney World,” says Vala. “The transportation problem is the same for everybody, you can’t be right on the spot.”
Vala says 24,000 people have taken Allegiant from Springfield to southwest Florida since the airline took over that route when DirectAir stopped service last March; and that’s a reason why Allegiant continues adding destinations to Springfield’s repertoire.
