Missing a Military Medal? The State May Have It

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford used Veteran’s Day to highlight the state treasurer’s unclaimed property division, branded as I-Cash, has a military component: Operation Reunite. The idea, says treasurer Dan Rutherford on this Veteran’s Day, is to reunite military families with lost or forgotten medals.

“I am the holder of at least 110 military medals in addition to additional ribbons, paperwork, dog tags, and the like that came out of safety deposit boxes out of financial institutions in Illinois that we can’t  find the rightful owners to,” Rutherford says.

Rutherford, one of four Republican candidates for governor, backed away from a chance to comment on Gov. Pat Quinn’s choice of Paul Vallas, a former Chicago schools CEO and onetime gubernatorial hopeful, as a running  mate, saying that the Republican nominee will be running against Quinn.

And, asked about same-sex marriage, which he opposes, Rutherford says if elected, he would uphold the law rather than try to repeal it.
