Mayor’s Appointment to Police Commission Generates Controversy
Mayor’s Appointment to Police Commission Generates Controversy

A little used commission has generated controversy over a potential appointment.

Springfield Mayor Mike Houston wants to appoint former police officer Michael Geiger to the Police Community Review Commission, which reviews and makes recommendations on complaints where no disciplinary action was taken. Ward 1 Alderman Frank Edwards says Geiger’s former position could cloud his judgement.

“I don’t know that that would be wise on our part to have a former police officer from that police department be on the police review board,” says Edwards. “That’s just my opinion.”

Residents were also concerned about Geiger’s alleged involvement in an incident where off duty police officers severely beat a citizen, resulting in a lawsuit.

The appointment was held in committee.
