The sponsor of the “mandatory minimum” gun crime bill hopes support from a former prosecutor is one change that will attract enough Yes votes.
State Rep. Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst) appeared with State Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) to promote the revamped bill, which – compared to an earlier version – takes someone’s record more into consideration. The bill also, among other things, removes boot camp as a penalty for certain gun crimes.
Reboletti brought up this year’s shooting of 13 people in Chicago.
“Bryon Champ was eligible for boot camp,” he said, “and had he been sentenced to mandatory prison, he would not have been able to commit the shooting in Cornell Park.”
SB 1342 has passed the House Judiciary Committee.
