A Springfield man late Wednesday allegedly stole an idling ambulance outside St. John’s Hospital and crashed it.
Police were called shortly before 11:00 Wednesday night after scanner traffic indicated a black male subject took the ambulance after EMT’s brought a patient to the St. John’s emergency room. Officers found the ambulance at 2nd and Washington Streets, where the ambulance crashed into a parking meter, utility pole and parking wall.
Albert Simmons, 24, was taken to St. John’s to be treated for cuts on his face. He was taken to the Sangamon County Jail on charges of motor vehicle theft.
