District 186 and the search firm they hired to select the next superintendent is ramping up their efforts to to receive applications. The search firm will be launching a national advertising campaign while holding meetings with various groups for input on what the community wants in Walter Milton’s successor. School board member Scott MacFarland says it is important to have a minority candidate as one of the finalist.
“We make sure we have someone with experience in urban districts. That they’ve dealt with the multiple neighborhoods, the multiple communities, the multiple ethnic groups, so that they come into this with an understanding of how Springfield works.”
MacFarland says a minority candidate will both represent the make up of the community as well as have knowledge of how to work well with minority communities.
