Gov. Pat Quinn says a lawsuit over lawmakers’ halted pay filed by the leaders of the Illinois House and Senate is “just plain wrong.”
In a Tuesday statement, Quinn says if lawmakers put in that much effort into overhauling Illinois’ pension mess, there could’ve been reform by now.
Quinn cut $13.8 million for legislators’ paychecks in the state budget this month. Lawmakers failed to come up with a solution to the nearly $100 billion pension crisis and when a pension panel blew another deadline, he stopped their pay.
House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton filed a lawsuit against Quinn in Circuit Court of Cook County saying Quinn’s action were “purely political and unconstitutional.”
Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka has said she has no choice but to withhold paychecks.
