Judge Rules: Police Internal Affairs Files “Not to be touched”

Springfield city attorneys were back in the courtroom Friday in a hearing regarding the police union’s request that the city abide by its agreement to destroy files older than four years old.  Circuit Judge John Schmidt issued a restraining order demanding the city retain all Internal Affair files but not release them until he issues a final ruling.

“The files stay where they are” ruled Schmidt

At stake are the files of more than 20 current and former police officers that have been requested by Calvin Christian under the Freedom of Information Act.  Union attorney Ron Stone says the contract between the city and the police union allow the destruction of files more than 4 years old.  Another hearing is scheduled for next Friday.
