Gov. Pat Quinn has formally introduced his pick for lieutenant governor.
Paul Vallas said he was “surprised, but not surprised” when Quinn asked him to be his running mate, pointing out the two have known each other for years.
“I got to know Pat very early. This is not the first time we’ve shared a podium together,” Vallas said at a news conference Tuesday in Chicago. “The opportunity to work for him is just an opportunity of a lifetime, and an opportunity I didn’t want to pass up.”
Vallas will be leaving his current job as school superintendent in Bridgeport, Conn. to join the campaign. When pressed about possible problems with Vallas’s residency, Quinn stepped in and said Vallas has remained a resident of Palos Heights while working outside the state.
