The city of Springfield has a new top attorney.
Mayor Mike Houston has appointed retired judge John Mehlick as acting corporation counsel. The appointment is on an interim basis and it is unclear how long that will be. Mehlick replaces outgoing Mark Cullen, who resigned late last month. Cullen left in the midst of an investigation into the shredding of police department internal affairs records.
Cullen resigned, while Police Chief Robert Williams announced an early retirement. His interim replacement is Kenny Williams, who has assumed the position.
Mehlick will assume the interim job August 19.
