Illinois’ Unemployment Rate Improves Slightly

Illinois’ unemployment rate is down. It comes in at 8.9 percent for October, down from 9.1 in September, as the state added 25,700 jobs over the last two months.  Illinois Department of Employment Security spokesman Greg Rivara says the rate is still too high.

“It’s encouraging that it’s going down, it actually fell in September and October, but it still remains unacceptably high. It shows that while we have made some progress, there still is more work to do,” he said.

The government shutdown in October caused the unemployment reports to skip a month. There was an expectation that the shutdown would harm the economy too, but the actual damage turned out to be slight.

Employment in Illinois is 5.8 million; unemployment is down 12,000 over the last month to 579,000.
