Illinois will use money from a federal wildlife grant to try to reintroduce a species of snapping turtle last documented in the state in 1984.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the Alligator Snapping Turtle is the largest turtle in Illinois. They can grow to a shell length of 30 inches and weigh more than 250 pounds.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Saturday it will provide about $500,000 in grant money to assist with the project. Illinois, Oklahoma and Louisiana also will contribute non-federal money.
The grant is part of $5.1 million in federal wildlife dollars being distributed to 11 states.
Illinois also is getting money to work with Iowa and Missouri to improve habitat for endangered birds and butterflies.
