Houston Responds to Selective Hiring Accusations

Mayor Mike Houston this week responded to continued allegations that the city’s not doing enough to hire minority employees.

Ward 2 Alderman Gail Simpson called the number of minorities on the city’s workforce “unacceptable,” noting that just eight percent of city workers are black and she’s not seeing any progress. Houston noted 17.6 percent of the more than 200 people hired since he took office have been minorities.

“If we had been hiring those types of numbers in past years, we would not be looking at the overall employment numbers that we have today,” said Houston.

Houston says minorities compose 8.75 percent of the city’s workforce — a one percent increase since he took office.
