Houston: Pay Back Police Pensions; Fire Pensions? Not So Fast
Houston: Pay Back Police Pensions; Fire Pensions? Not So Fast

While his budget director says the overpayment of firefighters and police pensions should be returned to the city, Mayor Mike Houston won’t go that far. Budget Director Bill McCarty told WTAX’s Ray Lytle that the overpayment of fire pensions could reach six figures and should be repaid.

Houston says only the overpayment to police should be returned because the pension board received a response to its appeal of a Department of Insurance 2007 ruling, but he says such response to the fire pension board was never acknowledged.

“The board at the time requested a hearing with the Illinois Department of Insurance; the Department of Insurance never held that hearing,” says Houston “So we are under a different set of circumstances than the police pension board because an order was given.”

The Illinois Department of Insurance ruled that both boards were using incorrect calculations; the fire board has been using the fuzzy math since 2007.
