Homeless Shelter Given Thumbs Down
Homeless Shelter Given Thumbs Down

A shelter for the homeless is still searching for a permanent home.  Helping Hands’ bid for a zoning change for a property on North 4th Street was overwhelmingly turned down by the Springfield City Council Tuesday night.  Attorney Gordon Gates, representing the organization, questioned aldermen asking …if not here, where?

“The facts are we have homeless people folks so all that is really left is, where do we put this thing” said Gates.

Proponents of the idea say the former Ace Sign Company building is ideally located because of the close proximity to transportation and other services.  Residents of the area say they already feel unsafe with the homeless population that congregate in that area just north of downtown.  Helping Hands Executive Director Rod Lane  says his organization will continue to search for a permanent home.
