Retired Sangamon County Deputy Wes Barr is officially running for the top spot.
Barr retired from the sheriff’s department after nearly 30 years in law enforcement in the area and says he is ready to take the reigns from retiring Sheriff Neil Williamson. With the Madison Park neighborhood as the backdrop for his campaign announcement Wednesday, Barr noted the area has significance for him since he grew up in the former John Hay Homes.
Barr is been highly visible for the last several years, both professionally and in his volunteer efforts and says he is and won’t compare himself to fellow candidate Undersheriff Jack Campbell. He says he is “uniquely qualified to take the job of Sheriff to the next level” and adds a top priority is to breathe new life into crime prevention efforts.
