Former Decatur Worker Charged in Bus-Fare Thefts

A former employee of the public transit agency in Decatur has been charged with theft of government funds after police said he stole more than $172,000 in bus fares.

Mark S. Gordon was arraigned in Macon County Circuit Court on Thursday.

Court officials say he has not yet entered a plea but is he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec. 4. Gordon’s attorney, Gary Geisler, was not available for comment.

According to The Herald & Review, the 56-year-old was arrested Oct. 12 after police watched surveillance video of someone leaving a city garage on a number of occasions carrying bags of money.

Police records show Gordon was found with a canvas bag filled with $1 bills, loose change and bus fare coins.
