After touring what he called the worst tornado damage he has ever seen, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says he hopes the federal government gives financial help to Washington, Ill., which it did not for Harrisburg from the Leap Year Day 2012 tornadoes.
“We had a disappointment in Harrisburg. I was sure that we were going to get federal assistance in Harrisburg. We didn’t, despite our best efforts,” Durbin said this (Friday) afternoon. “This devastation is much larger and much more likely to receive that federal designation.”
“As of today, we can report that there were officially 24 tornadoes, statewide, confirmed, Sunday, by the National Weather Service,” said Jonathon Monken, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
One of the six deaths in Illinois Sunday was in Washington. The other five were in Southern Illinois, two in New Minden and three in Brookport.
