The Springfield School District is being sued over its zero-tolerance weapons policy after expelling a straight-A student who had a knife in his car trunk.
The State Journal-Register reported Saturday that the student’s father claims in the lawsuit that the district unfairly failed to account for his son’s academic, extracurricular or disciplinary records.
He says his son had a 5.0089 grade-point average on a 5.0 scale, was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and belonged to the varsity golf and tennis teams.
Court records say police with a K-9 dog searched the car on Sept. 27 after receiving a tip that the student had marijuana. The search allegedly turned up a collector’s “Buffalo Bill” hunting knife inside a backpack, drug paraphernalia with traces of suspected marijuana and golf clubs.
