“Come on In and Stay Awhile”: A Springfield Gateway Revamped

Its been years in the making and has taken some creative thinking but one of the porches to the Home of Lincoln has been given a makeover.  Springfield Mayor Mike Houston says visitors to the city deserve nothing less.

“As a host, a proper welcome is required. This sign is the first is, of what we hope, will be municpal gateway signs at all the major entry points to Springfield,” Houston said at the official unveiling Thursday morning.

The $45,000 digital sign and the landscaping that was installed at the 5th/6th Street split was a private/public partnership Houston hopes can be replicated.

Springfield picked up half the cost of the sign; it was designed and installed by Ace Sign Company.  Coppertree Landscaping providing the plants and will maintain the area.  The project was spearheaded by the Ward 6 Fund, a group of area residents.
