City Upgrades 24 Vehicles to Propane

Springfield city officials say they’ll save on fuel costs by converting 24 city vehicles to run on propane.

Springfield Budget Director Bill McCarty says CleanFuelUSA and the Illinois EPA are paying for the upgrades entirely through grants. The city expects to save more than $82,000 in the first year. The city is also working with Lincoln Land FS which is providing the refueling propane station at no cost.

Fleet managers from Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana and Decatur all say they’re also interested in the program.

McCarty eventually hopes to expand this program and equip all city vehicles with propane gas.
