Springfield’s City Council will take up a possible settlement with Calvin Christian at next week’s full city council meeting. Tuesday, aldermen voted to move the proposed $100,000 deal to the debate agenda.
One alderman will not take place in any of the negotitiatons or voting. Sam Cahnman was recently Christian’s attorney in an unrelated traffic case but has since withdrawn.
“On the advice of my attorney and to avoid the appearance of impropriety, I will recuse myself from voting or deliberating” Cahnman says.
Christian is suing the city over the destruction of police internal affairs documents he requested under the Freedom of Information Act. The city has admitted guilt on one of the more than 70 counts in the suit.
