Cause of Menard County State’s Attorney Death Determined

Menard County’s state’s attorney has died of natural causes.

Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards announced Ken Baumgarten was pronounced dead Friday at Memorial Medical Center’s emergency room in Springfield just before midnight. He was 55.

After the review of medical documents, the coroner’s office has determined the cause of death to be Pulmonary Embolism. The death will be certified as accidental due to an injury Baumgarten sustained in early November.

Baumgarten, of Petersburg, had been state’s attorney for more than 15 years. He was a former legal counsel to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board. He was also a candidate for Menard County circuit judge.

Baumgarten is survived by his wife, Susan, and two children.
