The growth in businesses in Sherman has meant a growth in the village’s revenues. Sales taxes coming in from local stores and restaurants makes up 15 percent of the village’s budget, between 70 to 75 thousand dollars this year. Village President Trevor Clatfelter says this has allowed the village to make decreases in property taxes.
“Every single year, the Village of Sherman, out of all the different seven or eight line items on a tax bill, the amount that comes to our general revenue fund and the amount we levy as a board, we decreased taxes, have for six years I’ve been in office.”
Clatfelter says Sherman has increased levies on new developments to capture dollars on those levies. However he says they have not increased the levies to the point where a property owner ends up paying more.
