Another Dry Week for Farmers as Harvest Begins
The corn harvest has begun in Illinois.
Doug Hartwig of the USDA crop statistics service says 1 percent is completed.
“25 percent of the corn crop is rated mature, and that compares to 85 percent (at this time) last year, and 50 percent for the five-year average.” The corn conditions are 46 percent good or excellent and 23 percent poor or very poor.
Half the soybeans are rated good or excellent, with 42 percent turning yellow and 13 percent dropping leaves.
“I think some timely rains could probably help the crops,” especially the soybeans, says Hartwig.
