A major presence downtown will soon change names, but it won’t completely change hands.
The Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center will soon become a Doubletree by Hilton. Renovations are nearly complete and the hotel’s general manager, Jeff McLinden, says the transition is a bit ahead of schedule.
“The official name going forward will be ‘The President Abraham Lincoln Springfield — A Doubletree by Hilton,’” says McLinden. “We expect to join the Hilton family by approximately September 4 or so.”
McLinden doesn’t think the existing Hilton across the street will mean the two will compete with each other. Rather, he says it will be even harder for new hotels to break into the downtown market.
The Doubletree name is a franchise, which means local owner Steve Horve will still own the building and Hilton will act as more of a management company.
“They help us with our revenue, they help us with marketing, they help us with web design,” says McLinden. “Hilton is an active participant.”
