20-Year Sentence in Anakin Credit’s Death
20-Year Sentence in Anakin Credit’s Death

A 20-year prison sentence has been handed a Springfield man who pleaded guilty in the 2008 death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son. Mason Weems pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated battery of a child. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop a first-degree murder charge. Anakin Credit died in 2008 after Weems told authorities the boy had fallen in the bathtub and had trouble breathing. Weems was watching the boy while his mother was at work. After an autopsy, then-Sangamon County Coroner Susan Boone ruled Anakin died from a rare, undiagnosed cancer. Two other pathologists determined he’d died from abuse … as the state re-opened the investigation.
