The 21th Annual Charlie Wells Memorial Fly-In / Drive-In Pancake & Sausage Breakfast event will be held at Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport at Horizon Aviation on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, 2014, 8am to 12 noon.  The event is being co-sponsored by the Illinois Pilots Association Springfield Chapter and the Zonta Club of Springfield.  Cost is $7.00 per adult and $4.00 for children 12 to 5 and under are free.  Airplane rides may be available for $20.00 suggested donation per seat weather permitting.  A 50/50 raffle will be sold and a Zonta bake sale will take place.  The Route 66 Cruisers car club will display their cars on Saturday.  There will also be an exhibit of model airplanes along with other displays until 2 pm when we wind down.

Proceeds of the breakfast will be used to support scholarship programs and other service projects of the two organizations.  The Springfield chapter of the Illinois Pilots Association supports the Charlie Wells Memorial Aviation Scholarship and the Illinois Pilots Association Scholarship, both of which are awarded to students pursuing a career in aviation.  The Zonta Club of Springfield, a member of Zonta International, an international service organization whose mission is advancing the status of women worldwide, supports several local and international service projects.  Included are local scholarships for women pursuing careers in nursing and business, a  Young Women in Public Affairs award for a local high school student, contributions to local organizations that help women and children, and support of the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship program.  Amelia Earhart was a member of Zonta, and the Zonta International Foundation annually awards 35 $10,000 fellowships in her honor to women pursuing a doctorate degree in an aerospace related field.
The Charlie Wells Memorial Aviation Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Charlie Wells.  Charlie Wells started out as a crew chief in the WW II Army Air Corp.

Judge Approves Place for Mel Reynolds to Stay While on Bond

FILE - In this Nov. 28, 2012 file photo, former Illinois Congressman Mel Reynolds announces that he's running for the 2nd District seat vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr., in Chicago. Reynolds has been indicted on federal tax evasion charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago said in a statement Friday June 26, 2015. The indictment says the 63-year-old Chicago Democrat failed to file income tax returns for four consecutive years, between 2009 and 2012. Each count of failing to file carries a maximum one-year prison sentence. Reynolds resigned his Illinois congressional seat in 1995 after being convicted of statutory rape for having sex with an underage campaign worker. (AP Photo/M. Spencer Green, File)
