NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter fractured his left ankle diving for a ball during Saturday's American League Championship Series loss to the Detroit Tigers and will be out for the rest of the year.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who helped Jeter leave the field when he injured himself diving for Jhonny Peralta's ground ball in the 12th inning of the 6-4 loss in the opener of the seven-game series, delivered the news after the game.

"His ankle fractured," a grim Girardi told reporters. "It will be a three-month recovery period. It won't threaten his career, but he won't be playing any more this season."

Girardi said Jeter showed his usual toughness when the manager came out to help him off the field.

"You could see the disappointment in his face," Girardi said about the X-ray that revealed a crack in his ankle bone. "I mean, everyone in this room knows who he is."
