Virden Man Dies in Macoupin Co. Jail



A man being held in the Macoupin County Jail in Carlinville has died. Jail personnel found William Smith, of Virden, unresponsive inside his cell on Monday morning. 

They began life saving measures while an ambulance was en route.  Smith died a short time later at Carlinville Area Hospital.  He'd was locked up Sunday evening on a failure to appear warrant and was being held so he could appear before a judge. 

Autopsy results are pending.
