A bill allowing medical marijuana use passed an Illinois House committee today and will be heard on the House floor. State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie) proposes restrictions on who can and cannot use medical marijuana. “The results of other states like Colorado and California is exactly why we made this the tightest bill ever written. If you don’t have one of the 33 named diseases or issues, then you aren’t getting the card,” Lang said.
Ralph Rivera of the Illinois Family Institute says families are concerned about their children using marijuana. “For 12- to 17-year-olds they are all above the national average that are using marijuana in those medical marijuana states,” he said. State Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago) says there is a bigger issue than medical marijuana. “My biggest concern is the drugs these people are given, the legal drugs, the side effects of the legal drugs, and how some of these people become hooked on the legal drugs, and can’t get off, and they can’t afford it and then they die,” Flowers said. H.B. 1 passed the House Human Services Committee.
